We Invest in People and Communities
Our investments in mental health
From President Pines’ inaugural initiative to expand mental health services staffing to the recent successful completion of the UMD Mental Health Task Force sponsored by Provost Rice and Vice President Perillo, UMD has consistently prioritized the mental health and well-being of our campus community. This ongoing investment is strengthened by the dedication of our faculty and staff and the commitment of our caring students.

As Seen on Beyond the Field
The Center for Healthy Families housed in the Department of Family Science provides sliding-scale couples, family and individual therapy by training graduate student therapists under the supervision of clinical faculty. The center advances UMD's mission to do good by supporting the wellness of our UMD community and our nearby neighbors, and by training our graduate students to do the same.
Each year, the UMD Mental Health Coalition organizes a week of fun, engaging programming to improve the mental health of our campus community. Check back in at the link below for 2024's Mental Health Awareness Week events taking place on campus from October 6-12.
A one-credit course offered by the School of Public Health is designed to give students the tools they need to manage anxiety, stress and depression—and to turn what they've learned outward to help peers in need.
Mental Health Emergency Assessment and Response Team
The Mental Health Emergency Assessment and Response Team (MHEART) is an innovative and comprehensive approach to managing mental health emergencies on campus. MHEART clinicians partner with the University of Maryland Police Department as first responders to after-hours mental health emergencies.
New Initiative Equips Undergrads to Be ‘Mental Health Leaders’ on Campus
Campus and Community Leaders in Mental Health (CCLiMH) offers courses, discussion groups and training to help students, faculty and staff community navigate mental health concerns with other members of our campus community.
The Center for Young Children is a research center and laboratory school housed in the College of Education. The center provides high-quality, research-based early childhood care while conducting cutting-edge child development research.
A popular course teaches students about masculinity and how it affects family health and well-being.
A Broader Approach to Public Safety
The University of Maryland Police Department's Crisis Intervention Team is trained specifically to recognize and understand symptoms of mental illness or distress, safely de-escalate emergency situations and identify community resources that can offer the appropriate assistance.
A four-week, peer-led experience designed to build resilience in first-year students, RADical Health supports the development of mental, physical, and emotional well-being.
Championing Student Involvement
Student groups are an invaluable resource on our campus, allowing each of our students to find a sense of belonging among their peers. Each year, UMD hosts the First and Second Look Fairs where students can find groups that meet their interests, and students are always encouraged to join groups all year long!
Ways to Engage on Campus
Mental Health Task Force
The UMD Mental Health Task Force was charged with investigating the mental health and well-being of our students, faculty and staff by examining existing services, programs and resources, determining gaps and identifying interventions to enhance well-being on our campus.
